Sitting, 1978, mixed media on board,  36 x 24 inches Sold

This is a mixed media painting from a life drawing sketch of a Dutch model I enjoyed drawing very much. While I was in Holland I studied figure drawing for two years, nine hours a day. This painting was done as extra curricular homework. My education both before and in Holland was unstructured, without rhyme or reason. It felt like, and still feels like that to me now, that I was dropped into hurricane and had to grab what tools I could. One important lesson I learned from this period was to observe the big picture, not to get caught up in details. For example the dark lines at her shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hip are all different tones according to their placement in space. After all these years I still feel I wouldn't change a thing in the this painting.
