Michael Newberry's Mission Statement–Figurative Drawing Explorations
An important factor in my creativity and artistic growth is to explore the countless possibilities of the human figure. This is the area to let go of the tried and known, and try new subjects, feelings, symbols, concepts, lighting, arrangements, and techniques. Drawing is a most virtuosic method in which a 30–second sketch can convey an emotional expression or with hundreds of hours, it can detail the human psyche.
One of my favorite mediums is charcoal on paper. It never ceases to amaze me that figurative charcoal drawing is a 30,000 year old expression. There is something magical in holding one of the foundations of humanity in your hand while expressing something new with it.
