Adam Turning Away, 2008, charcoal on Rives BFK, 19 x 26"

Adam Turning Away reflects many levels of meaning; some quite personal.

I remember being outraged reading about the Pope ordering to cover up the Michelangelo's nudes of the Sistine Chapel. How dare anyone presume to edit or correct the work of such a great artist.  In periods of art history religious puritans have added fig leafs to cover up genitalia. In Adam Turning Away I am making fun of the fig leaf covering by simply using the cast shadow from his hand to mimic a fig leaf. Here Adam is rejecting, turning away from any edicts that attach guilt or sin to genitalia. I like that the larger cast shadow of his body is forceful, adamant in stance.

Hand painted sienna oil, 8-ply acid free rag board, uv glass (upon shipping uv plexi glass will be substituted.)
