Rising Thoughts
, 2008, charcoal on Rives BFK, image 19 x 26" $900

Making art is a wonderful experience for me. I can explore my imagination, emotions, and thoughts to my heart's content. An exalting part of it is when the image merges with and supports the concept.  As soon as I saw the shadow rising above the model I knew the title for this piece. But there is more to it--a huge part of my thinking about art involves groupings of three things. For example, emotion, senses, and mind. Or triangulating my three top highlights, or my three darkest darks. Also, I regularly use the triangulation of points/landmarks as a proportion tool. The math part of art making is absolutely essential if one wants to make natural looking and proportionate people. While doing this process I have to switch my mind to purely mathematical mindset. For me it feels just how this model looks.

I love how there are so many triangular negative shapes. The negative shapes are spaces between the positive shapes of his legs and arms. And it's cool how this come up again in the cast shadow.

One device I have been using throughout this series is the use of line. Quite on purpose I have accented the contours of the body with line, his calves and feet here, especially when that part of the figure is not in direct light.
