Figurative art became my first love when I
saw Rembrandt's portrait of his wife,
Saskia. And after four decades of art making I still love
making portraits
and nudes.
The paintings and
drawings here are
explorations, visual poems, or
sketches. Fully worked out concepts and
monumental works (life size) are
in another category -
Major Works.
One of my favorite quotes is
from
Courbet,
a painter of nudes extraordinaire:
“I am
fifty years old and I have always lived
in freedom let me end my life free; when
I am dead let this be said of me: 'He
belonged to no school, to no church, to
no institution, to no academy, least of
all to any régime except the régime of
liberty."
Courbet's connection,
and mine, to
the nude is that it is about
freedom, sensuality, and the
irrepressible and unique soul.
Clothes in paintings are about status
and time period. They can often date a
work, interrupting the connection to the
meaning.
Friends and models often
collaborate with me on the themes, feelings, and
poses. My aim is to express those things
through natural looking people. In my
twenties and thirties I spent massive
amounts of time mastering anatomy, and a
deceptive easy
looking figurative fluency.
