Yin/Yang, 2006, oil on canvas panel,  12x16" $600

Plein air painting can feel very child like in a way. 40 minutes is not much time to get a lot in, and if anything goes wrong in that time period, you simply blast your way through it! For example to get the light of the clouds I had to really layer it on thick. In one way this looks crude but there is quite a bit of nuance, for example the color shifts in the sky: pale violets and blues, cerulean blue, and different tones and hues of white.

I called this Yin/Yang because the two angular shapes of the sky the angular canyon floor reminded me of its symbol.  And I love the idea of the shape of sky/air balancing with with the shape of earth.
