Michael Newberry, View from Above, 1994-2006, oil on panel, 18 x 22 inches.

For a brief while my studio was in a glass box, 11 floors up in the foothills of Hollywood. It felt as if I was suspended in space. I painted this painting at a radical change in my private life; I was seeing so many things from fresh perspectives.

I have a particular view about technical elements of painting and how they aren't simply visual tools but rather they are about  life. Perspective and composition are interesting cases in point.  There are tried and true ways to compose paintings but I have never like the tried and true I like to startle and be startled by new ways of seeing. And I think that is a great metaphor for life: do you want to dull predictable unchanging environment or somewhere fresh, new, a place where you have to keep your wits about you? In a serious way the art you collect can reflect your perspectives about life.
