Newberry, Husk, 2012, oil on canvas, 12 x 9 inches.
Available

One of the doubts I had about doing this still life was the seasonal theme that reminds us of Turkey dinner and pumpkin pie. And not that that is bad, anyone who is half way nice likes holiday stuff.  But good art themes deal with something more universal and less specific than a holiday table setting. So what is special about this painting?

The combinations of the colors of the set up blew me away. And the textures, the crackling, pale parchment-like husk. When I got into painting it I could taste the shadow colors. It gives me a delicious, sensuous joy to make marks of color like in this painting.

But without a doubt one of the most outstanding elements of this painting is that it has an outrageously good composition - it works side to side and from front to back (in 3d). The ebb and flow of the 3 little negative dark cubes (two cubes and on triangle) in-between the husk leaves rocks my world. Though it is merely a still life oil sketch it is one of my greatest compositions.
