MONTHLY STUDIO UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2001

Studio Updates:

Most of October was devoted to painting on Artemis and Venus.  The changes made to Artemis were that I deleted the flower motif that was on the wall behind her and I have begun to add color. :)  What I will attempt to do is to finish the background and all the areas surrounding her and then have the model back in my studio to finish the body.  Painting the carpet might seem like color by numbers, just fill in between the black lines, but the saturation and vibrancy of the colors intensifies as the motifs of the carpet are closer to us and they diminish as the motifs recede.  Notice the difference between the two reds by her elbows; the red on her right elbow is much more intense than on the red on her left.  This device helps create spatial depth and 3 dimensionality.

Pencil Study for Artemis.

This pencil study is very small, about 2x5 inches.  It could be considered a thumbnail sketch, which is a small study of your idea.  The idea is, and it does work, that the smaller you make a study the easier it is to focus on the big picture.  Two things I am getting done here are the design of the composition and tones, light and darks.  Even as the painting develops I will keep this little sketch handy as a reminder of what my original indent was.

On Venus I was not happy with what was happening when I started with the color of the sky and part of mountains.  So I backtracked, which meant to me to me to work out the form and light monochromatically.   But before I could do that directly on the linen I worked-out several options as pencil thumbnails.  In early updates I showed a few pastels and pencil drawings that I made of the coast of Turkey at dawn; I arranged those studies on my studio wall, studied them and then sketched thumbnail composites. From the six studies below I will let you guess which one I am using as my guide for Venus.

Non-Studio Updates:

In the last week of October I went to London for week and had a thorough look inside the Tate and the Tate Modern.  One of the exhibits at the Tate Modern inspired a new article I have written, Pandora's Box.   I will keep you posted when it is published.

For the week of November 8th through the 15th I will be with a group as their personal art guide in Tuscany.  We will be staying in Cortona, a Medieval village in the Tuscan hillsides and we will make daily excursions to Montepulciano, Perugia, Assisi, Siena, and Florence.  Ah, beautiful landscapes, great art, delicious food, and delightful and intelligent people...can't wait!

I am in the process of creating a non-profit organization devoted to the advancement of real art.  I will keep you posted on the progress of its birth.

Exhibition Schedule:

November 24th to December 7--Group Exhibition, The Contemporary Museum of Greek Art in Rhodes.

January 19th to the first of February--Solo exhibition, The Contemporary Museum of Greek Art in Rhodes.
