Monthly Studio Update - April, 2004

body

UPDATED: April 15th.

Non-Studio Update:

On April 2nd I gave the talk, The Quest For Sensuality, Truth, and Exaltation Through Art, presented by The Rockford College Philosophy Club.

I have taken over www.RomanticRealism.net, and I have set it up as a commercial site. You can see, at a glance, the recent work I have made since 2002.

I have also taken over the supervision of www.artadvancement.org. My next project there is to set-up links to the sites of innovative representational painters and sculptors, interesting galleries, and postmodern articles.

Studio Update.

I finished this pastel a few weeks ago. I enjoyed tweaking the composition. All the background stuffs are tons of papers littering the floor in my office. It is the only room I have "blacked out", the windows are covered in heavy-duty black trash bags to block the light. This allows me to use lamp light anytime of day.

In the last few days I retouched this pastel from Rhodes, 2002. I was going through my stacks of drawings and I came across it, saw why it was unfinished and preceded to work it.

Worked more on this portrait today. I hardly touched the face but worked on getting the front of the shirt to "come forward" in front of his chin. Especially in such a detailed work as this it is important for me not just to add detail but make damn sure the details accent the spatial relationship of forms.

Another glass jar underway. I have really enjoyed painting the recent still lives with a glass jar. This will be similar to the pastel above but it is in oil. I am curious when it is finished how it will be different to the pastel. The dark vertical and horizontal lines are black vine charcoal, they wipe off easily. I use them here to make sure the glass is symmetrical.
