Monthly Studio Update - February, 2005

body

Studio Update:

40 New Works.

Sorry for January and February’s delay but I have had to replace my hard drive and I kept opting to paint instead of re-uploading all the computer stuff.

Little Goddess, 2005, oil on linen, 21 ½ x 26”. Available.

Little Goddess is complete after many years of juggling light, forms, and background objects. I composed a poem about her theme:

Little Goddess

She bore the night of his fear,

And ferried him,

Effortlessly,

To the sights of Icarus.

She embraced the flight of his glow,

And held it,

Simply,

In the pulse of her body.

She seared the light of his gravity,

And eased him,

Gently,

To light in a ground of green and gold.

Joseph, 2005, acrylic on archival panel, 12 x 16”. Available.

Joseph is complete. I believe I started work on him around March ’04. Though to many people the painting might look classical there is a wonderfully modern stylistic element that I incorporated in it. Two outstanding features of Joseph’s expression are the arc of his eyebrow and upper lip. I accented this arc motif throughout the painting. Notice the arcs of his collar, head, upper ear, upper nostril, upper chin, in folds of the background material.

Blind, 2005, oil on archival panel, 12 x 16”. Available.

Blind was a difficult work not for the obvious complexity of the perspective composition but because I one had a small window of opportunity, of about 15 minutes, when the sunlight hit the blind. And I had to be fortunate that I would have clear sunshine or I won’t be able to work that day. I love the crisscross patterns of the solid objects vs. the casted lights and shadows. I also like the idea of one of the possible themes: a prison of light.

I have been spurned on to make more oil sketches around and in my studio.

Paper Towel, 2005, oil on archival panel, 9 x 12”. Available.

Coffee Pot—Gray, 2004, oil on archival panel, 9 x 12”. Available

Coffee Pot—Gray 2, 2004, oil on archival panel, 9 x 12”. Available

Recent I bought a special panel and canvas carrying box. It holds up to 12 panels without any object touching the surfaces. The box has enabled me to make many oil paintings outside without worrying about protecting the wet paint.

Brush, work in progress, oil on archival panel, 9 x 12”.

Wood Floor, work in progress, oil on archival panel, 9 x 12”.

Some of the work I am making is under studio conditions and I can not only come back to it anytime I want to but I can also spend some time developing the details. I will be doing that with Wood Floor and a few of the following works.

Easel, work in progress, oil on archival panel, 12 x 16”.

Toucan Table, work in progress, oil on archival panel, 12 x 16”.

Because I have been working so much outside I have not had time to go back to this self—portrait though I very much look forward to finishing it.

Reflected Self-Portrait, work in progress, oil on archival panel, 12 x 16”.

Mike, 2005, work in progress, pastel on black paper.

A quick pastel of a friend of mine.

Self-Portrait in Red, working in progress, oil on archival panel, 8 x 10”.

I have been playing with this self—portrait for years, I like the idea that I am only using variations of red paint…the eyes are actually magenta but compared to all the heat of the red—oranges they appear blue.

Kimberly, work in progress, pencil on Rives BFK paper, 18 x 24”.

After finally completing Little Goddess I have been a bit freed up to begin a new major work. I have a great connection with Kimberly, who stepped in for Little Goddess and Venus, and I have begun the early stages of creating a life-size portrait, from the waist up. The end result with be an oil painting but I will be making several studies, such as this line drawing, which will serve as a compositional study.

About availability, look for updated info on these works at www.RomanticRealism.net later this month.

Non-Studio Updates:

Last month Dr. Stephen Hicks and I have spent a few days brainstorming and banged out the outline for our upcoming book tentatively titled Explaining Postmodern Art. In truth the work was a tremendous amount of fun and I am excited and honored to work with such a knowledgeable and clever mind and one heck of a good guy.
