Studio Update:

Venus
, 2008, oil on linen, 48 x 48"

A couple of weeks ago, mid-March, I finished and signed Venus. No matter where she is in my my studio I enjoy her immensely, out of the corner of my eye I see this glowing woman. And there is this wonderful feeling that I don't see anything that needs tweaking.

Later this month I plan to complete an online presentation of how she came about. Below is my intro to the legend of Venus.

At conception there was a violent chaos between heaven and earth, debris crashed into the dark blue sea, where from the ocean deep it foamed, and then transformed into a beautiful woman. She was first seen on the rust-colored rocky coast of Cyprus, naked, fully-formed without past, guilt, or obeisance. Each dawn the symbol of her birth is renewed, as she immerges from the cobalt sky and rises as the brightest star in the heavens, announcing the glowing warmth of day to come.

The Artist's I

The first article for my column, The Artist's I, comes out this month in The New Individualist. Follow the link to order a free copy or to subscribe. http://www.objectivistcenter.org/cth-42-1328-New_Individualist.aspx

I review Peter Schipperheyn's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. One of the article's themes is that the nude in visual art is an expression of individuality.

In May I review a few works by Jeff Larson, in which I note his superb ability to perceive and visually communicate reflected, refracted, and translucent color of light.

In June I am examining NY artist Jacob Collins' scientific exploration of beauty.

And in July I will be hitting the baked pavements of Los Angeles with William Wray, the Raymond Chandler of urban landscape.

After finishing Venus I enjoyed updating my web site. If you haven't looked around lately I recommend doing so.

* In the Press section I have uploaded four in-depth interviews conducted by some sharp people.

* The Price List section has been updated and remodeled.

* In the Art section I brought back the sold works to give you a better overview.

* The Artists in the Mentor Program section has been updated to give you links to their blogs and sites.

* And their are four open spots remaining out of ten for the Mexico Workshop in San Luis Potosi in August.

Btw, if you come across any faulty links please shoot me an email at newberryworkshop@earthlink.net

On the Easel

I just started a new still-life, 32 x 28".  I am painting over a used canvas with the image of woman. I was never going to finish that piece... I made separate color pastel studies on the black paper on the right.

Well, that is it for April. I hope this studio update makes this tax month a little more bearable.
