About Michael Newberry's Instruction and Tutorials
San Luis Workshop in Mexico

I loved this workshop and would definitely do it again. Michael is a passionate artist and great teacher; he explained complex ideas in simple ways, making them easy to grasp and apply. After this workshop, I learned to see color and light with a keener eye (like there are so many colors in shadows!), and that has certainly affected my painting after the workshop. I can now apply these techniques to other styles of painting and other genres other than landscapes, and as an art teacher myself, I can now teach students about color, light, mark making and technique in simpler ways. Plus... it was a great experience to see the Mexican landscape for what it really is, besides a vacation spot. I met and shared conversations and art-making with a group of friendly, artistic people who I would never have met if it wasn't for this workshop.

The experience I had at Michael Newberry's Plein Air Painting workshop in San Luis Potosi, Mexico was phenomenal .  The accommodations were beautiful, each day was filled with delicious food, gorgeous views, and excellent instruction.  By the end of the week, all of the participants knew each other well and were sad to say good-bye.  I returned home with a collection of Mexican landscape paintings that I was able to share and be proud of.  This was the perfect balance of work and fun.  Now when I gaze at a landscape, I think about painting it!  I fell in love with San Luis Potosi and hope to return someday.  Michael Newberry taught me to see the outdoors as an artist.

Thank you so much for coming back to Florida to hold the Zoom!
workshop.  It was a wonderful learning experience, and a kick-start to
getting me back to something I have avoided for far too long.  Your
gift for instruction, helpful comments and patience were very much
appreciated.  I hope to see you again soon.

Anatomy of Light Workshop

Thank you so much for your kind email and your artistic support.  What can I say?  The whole workshop was just really cool.

Working with you was a revelation!  You have quite a knack for channeling your gifts into fruitful instruction (which is itself another gift).  Looking back at how you deliberately broke down the challenges of rendering light, I appreciate all the more the thought that went into your structured lessons.

Another thing I truly appreciate is how seriously you took all of us as students of art; you didn’t water things down for us non-professionals —at least it certainly didn’t feel that way — when guiding eyes and our hands.  And when giving critical feedback, you always had concrete suggestions for how to improve things.  Your manner had a way of conveying the difficulties without making us feel lost.  In addition,  I felt very comfortable in your space, thanks to the ethos you create in your studio.

Thank you for conducting the workshop.  I’m so glad there will be more in the near future.
Julie Yoo

Thank you so much for your generous nature and most importantly, providing the hope of possibility.

Tutorials

I just wanted to take a moment to say THANKS for the awesome tutorials you've shared with us on your website.  Your contribution means a lot to those of us just beginning to explore the wonderful world of ART (among others).

Because of you, I now have the concept of interesting shape in each of the four corners of my paintings running through my head. I have been following that simple suggestion, wherever possible. I, too have realized that my most popular works have, indeed, had that attribute, whether planned, or by sheer luck.
I find your teaching of composition techniques to be extremely understandable, and easy to follow. Your examples serve you well, also...that's what makes you a superb teacher, in my opinion.
You seem to not be hesitant to offer a few simple rules or suggestions that nearly anyone can follow (and remember), that results in better works of art. I, for one, appreciate that approach. And, it surely works with me, although some would consider it to be too simplistic, I'm sure.
I found your Artemis step-by-step to be extremely interesting, as well. Most artists' WIP's bore me silly, but I couldn't stop reading yours.
I appreciate your contributions to Wet Canvas...
Thanks once more for your input.

THANK YOU! I stumbled across your site including the mini tutorials and will ever be grateful.  I started college level art course 3 years ago upon my early retirement.  However, I have learned more from a few days with you than in the 3 years in school!Carolyn Neville

Mentor

I'm a beginning painter, and this was my first painting under the mentorship of Michael. I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to study under him. He took the time to explain color theory, and how it worked within my subject, as well as composition, movement, and unbelievably great techniques likes glazing and scumbling. I can't recommend his mentorship class enough. THANK YOU Michael!!!!!!!!

Murphy, Neutral Zone, 2007, charcoal on paper, 30 x 23

I recently started working under Michael's mentorship.  Under his tutelage my work has taken a huge leap forward - I sold the first piece that I did with Michael within hours of finishing it! Michael's enthusiasm and ability to impart years of accrued knowledge has made the programme so enjoyable.  I cannot thank him enough for the time and effort he takes with covering all aspects of becoming a professional artist, from preparing websites, how to finish work, tips on framing and marketing.  I am so glad that I took the plunge and decided to do this - I only wish I had done it sooner!

It is the best decision I have made involving my art career.
Michael knows how to pull the best out of my work.
I am coming from an Industrial Design background,
so we have an about face in the works.
I am so excited about what I have produced recently.
He has kept me focused, even while one of my children has been ill.
He is direct, kind, giving, and so extremely talented.
Having had the luxury of spending one day in NY painting in his studio,
and another here in SoCA painting plein air with him, he is a joy.
I have taken classes at a prestigious art college here,
and I have to say Michael's, mentoring program is quite a deal.
He maps out an individual plan, and the two of you work to see it come together.
I always am so excited to talk with him, but then after two hours of notes,
and studying the work, it is a draining experience.
He leaves me so inspired and motivated,
that I can't wait to see what I can pull off to show him the next time.
I am just about ready to publish my website, and all due to Michael's encouragement.
So as you can see, I have only positive words to say about my mentor.
If you have any specific questions, I would be happy to answer them.
I hope this has been helpful.

Woodul, Espiritu Ascendente, 2007,charcoal on Rives BFK, 16x26

I have spent several years searching for a way to express my feelings through art, but simply couldn't find one.  It hasn't been until now, being part of Michael Newberry's Mentor Program, that I have been given the tools to make this search so much easier.  Michael has a magical way to forward his feeling for art to his apprentices in a way that all of the sudden the technique, feelings and skills, become your own.  The dedication to his program and apprentices comes from the love and passion he has for Art and is so real in his work.
This is the best art experience I have had in my life and I will be forever grateful to him for this.

I can't believe how much I've learned from Michael in such a short period of time!  I thoroughly enjoy the classes and am incredibly happy with the art I am making under his direction.  Michael is a master of his craft, and I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from him.  I can't emphasize enough how much I recommend his classes!
