Across the history of art, the creation of an epic cycle of paintings is an exceptionally rare undertaking. Of those, from historical-religious-propaganda cycles like Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling or Rubens’ Marie de’ Medici cycle to Alphonse Mucha’s ethno-nationalistic The Slav Epic, all required external institutional or patron support to come about.
By contrast, my Space Series of secular gods and nebulae (each 64×48″, oil on linen, its theme their shadowed selves are transparent and the stuff of the universe, lines mark their boundaries, and light defines who they are.) approaches its eighteenth of twenty-four paintings over four years of work. This comes after five and a half decades and more than 1,800 works, painted on my own initiative out of love. That puts the Space Series in an even rarer framing.
It is also a great honor that poet, Trudi Nicola, composed a piece for each of them.

In dark and night and shadow
Through flame and fire and light
A subtle, glimmering half glow
Evolves through pure delight
Each shimmering vibration
Attracts another force
On pathways of elation
Desire, through aeons, course
No end and no beginning
No boundaries, no shame
Raw beauty underpinning
As Gods ignite the flame
One collision in one moment
One explosion beyond time
One creation, one conception
Manifesting sparks divine
-Trudi Nicola

Invoking power drawn from beyond
Those darkest realms release their bond
Pure energy focused, here assumes
A spherical form, born not of womb
Each roiling, rolling ball of heat
Obeys the gods, will not compete
With greater deities than they
When mighty Cronos, time can sway
With lazer vision, instinct honed
This creator does not atone
A brooding focus, awe unwrapped
As swirling matter is entrapped
Bring forth the planets, let them fly!
Across the great, star-studded sky!
The mighty sun calls to each sphere
As elliptical orbits trace each year
-Trudi Nicola

A distant light
From times of old
Caresses night
With plumes of gold
A memory
Of gentle sleep
A destiny
To sow, to reap
As starlight glows
A warm embrace
Each goddess knows
Her rightful place
A bond that ties
Stronger than blood
None can deny
Their sisterhood
Awaken now
Open your eyes
Upon your brows
Rest starlit skies
Celestial spheres
Now sing your song
As dawn appears
It won’t be long
For all are waiting
As this begins
To reinstate
Divine feminine
As distant light
From distant space
Turns wrong to right
A blest embrace
-Trudi Nicola

From out of chaos
A maelstrom turns
With twisting violence
All matter churns
The heavens stir
Drawn in, entranced
By raw creation
A fertile dance
A figure forms
Takes shape, ignites
Combining darkness
Fire and light
All elements
Converge within
This divine goddess
As she spins
Arms raised, exultant
In wreaths of gold
Her soul transcends
All stories told
Enlightenment
Sparks from her frame
Her metamorphosis
An eternal flame
As starlight glimmers
Through purple haze
Beyond her shoulder
Rests her gaze
As we once were
So we become
This mystery
Through time, is spun
And as she twists
Each pirouette
She weaves remembrance
Not regret
Through earth and water
Fire and air
Through timeless ether
Sublime, laid bare
May all who follow
In her wake
Transcend, transform
Pure beauty, make
-Trudi Nicola

In the heat of the moment
When temperatures rise
And logic is clouded
Weighed heavy with sighs
When all understanding
Has swirled with the mist
And cooperation
Has ceased to exist
When what you say matters
More than what you hear
And tempers fray quickly
Motivated by fear
Reach out to the heavens
Seek guidance from stars
For this disagreement
Seems small from afar
Trust in each other
Lay discord to rest
The depth of your passion
Can withstand this test
We may not agree
On what’s wrong or what’s right
Yet the heart of the cosmos
Gently pulses with light
So silence harsh words
Release thoughts of attack
Let divine love flow through you
What you give, you get back
-Trudi Nicola

And so the seventh day arrives
Primeval dawn, whence all derives
With satisfaction through labour born
The one Creator surveys this morn
A universe made on a whim
Collated heavens, all life within
A separation of dark and light
The birth of time, of day, of night
Though formless then, the spirit stirred
Within the void, creation heard
All living things began to form
Disparate matter condensed, conformed
As energetic chaos unleashed
The Creator saw all and was pleased
As earth and sky and waters emerge
Abundant fruits and grass converge
Observing each day’s work anew
The sun, the moon, as stars accrue
All manner of creatures breathe their first
And humankind, as yet uncursed
And so the seventh day arrives
The Creator rests and closes eyes
That saw each possibility
For completion and for sanctity.
-Trudi Nicola

Within each one remains cocooned and hid
A remnant of the universe we see
Just like Pandora’s jar without a lid
A maelstrom waits and stirs impatiently
Hush now and silence all beyond your heart
Shut out disturbances and sooth your mind
Sense now where lies in you that ancient part
That binds your divine soul to humankind
In all of history there comes a time
When light must face the darkness and we choose
If we will stand for reason or for rhyme
Can we ignite creation, win or lose?
Wait not a moment longer, now’s the time
The brilliance of life flows in your veins
A pulsing, gleaming energy sublime
Release it, for it is not yours to tame
Within each one there swirls a galaxy
Of infinite potential, endless hope
The universe depends on those who see
Who add their luminescence to the scope
-Trudi Nicola

Infused with power
Her golden glow
Illuminates
Each ebb and flow
Each pulse of energy creates
A living canvas
Whilst death abates
A perfect circle
Formed of gold
Raised to the heavens
Let all behold
The clarity
And warmth, herein
With her, the path
To joy begins
She is the start
She is the end
Enlightenment
Upon her, depends
Watch darkness falter
Shadows flee
As incandescent
Rays are freed
With regal bearing
A leonine light
Her grace and splendour
Subdue the night
All life we know
On her, depends
To rightful songs
Of praise, we tend
In all the cosmos
There is but one
Who may gaze, with reverence
Upon the sun
With pure devotion
With arms raised high
She holds this glory
Within our skies
-Trudi Nicola

Look not upon
The blackest skies
Direct your gaze
Into my eyes
Do you not see
My symmetry –
A balance of
Geometry?
Would you name me
A work of art –
Does science rule
My perfect heart?
Each separate part
Creates a whole
A harmony
Revealing soul
My divine form
Embodies life
The circle, squared
Transcending strife
Arms outstretched wide
I can embrace
The spirit of
This human race
Let darkness fade
Focus on dawn
A model for
All life has formed
Look not for truth
Externally
For within lies
Eternity
Though well-proportioned
As I am
We all are made
Vitruvian
-Trudi Nicola

As if in a dream-like state I fall
Billowing gas clouds emerge and enthrall
Sweet slumber eludes me, hides beyond sight
For here there’s no notion of day or of night
Energy surges, it crackles and burns
Sparks of potential release as I turn
The cosmos and I are at one in this place
A living embodiment of time and of space
Gone are the shadows, gone is the doom
Transparent and light-filled, I banish all gloom
Exuberance bubbles and fizzes with joy
Stars scatter the heavens, reflecting my ploy
A dance of abandon, a wildness within
A swirling surrender as the universe spins
Arms stretching, triumphant, leg raised I create
A sense of eternity, a living lemniscate
-Trudi Nicola

As night becomes day
And day turns to night
As planets revolve
Each sphere of delight
As starlight peeps through
And darkness pervades
In each passing moment
Eternity displayed
I am the watcher
The guardian of space
Betwixt heaven and earth
I prevent their embrace
I am endurance
Through strength and pure will
I shoulder the heavens
A destiny fulfilled
Do not look in pity
For the burden I bear
Stabilises the universe
A unique solitaire
As day becomes night
And night turns to day
All balance and order
In the cosmos, I sway
-Trudi Nicola

Gaze not upon
The velvet sky
The dwindling stars
From whence light flies
Turn not your eyes
Towards the night
The dark enveloping
Clouding sight
Behold instead
The birth of one
Immortal Goddess
Eclipsing suns
Eternal beauty
Glows within
Dark nebulae
Banished at whim
Translucent skin
Reveals her art
Of soft seduction
Rupturing hearts
Atop her head
White roses bloom
A crown of innocence
Eclipsing gloom
Those pure of mind
And pure of soul
May know her essence
Glimpse her, whole
Yet do not flatter
To deceive
Her wrath will cause
Your heart to grieve
-Trudi Nicola

All life and light
Contained within
Illuminates
Translucent skin
A galaxy
Of stars gestate
As sacred life force
Radiates
What miracles
Stir in her womb?
A timeless Goddess
In full bloom
All health and beauty
Here, displayed
Her full term glory
Displacing shade
Though pain awaits
She knows the worth
The human cost
Of giving birth
Her wise compassion
Stills each gaze
Life giving Goddess
The skies do praise
Behold her power
Behold her light
As she, in beauty
Walks through the night
-Trudi Nicola

Swift of mind and
Swift of foot
Unbound from Earth
Each tether cut
Unbridled passion
Lust for life
Flows through your veins
An ardour, rife
Without much thought
Without much care
You rise triumphant
Extraordinaire
A pantheon
Can’t pin you down
You claim star clusters
As your crown
With poise and grace
You spin and wield
Your brand of magic
A stardust shield
Impervious
Fear has no place
Behold, for Pan
Now claims this space
A final gesture
With defiant glee
You kick each universe
To eternity
-Trudi Nicola

From light to life
From nebulae
Formed not of rib
Of man, was I
That spark divine
Within my core
Graced me with
Free will, choice
And more
Though I tread
Cautiously, I know
That where I step
My man will go
Do not the stars
Illuminate
A way for me
A path to take
Hesitancy
Will not serve well
I must go forth
My tale to tell
I pause a moment
Turning back
The universe
Conceals all lack
This time is perfect
This time is mine
Reveal Creation
Vitality sublime
My mind is strong
My heart sings true
In blessed Eden
I’ll be with you
Discard the shadows
Dispel the night
Be gone, ye demons
You’ve lost this fight
For I walk in beauty
A soul without strife
I am Eve; I am woman
The giver of life
-Trudi Nicola

Star of evening
Star of morn
Blessed infant
Of thy womb, born
Sacred mother
Of heav’n and earth
All hearts united
Through his birth
Humbly, we gaze
Upon thy face
Illuminated
By holy grace
Kindness, compassion
Fill thine eyes
Reflections of
The star-filled skies
A thousand sparks
Of shining light
Are drawn to you
In darkest night
Each tiny star
A soul who knows
Where true light gathers
True love grows
Divine Madonna
To you we pray
When evening falls
And at break of day
Let us remember
In blackest night
Your presence lingers
In each starry light
-Trudi Nicola

Magnificent work! I can’t decide which one is my favorite so far. So much emotion and passion in each of these paintings. Your artwork is one that I would love to study; I may not know how to paint or even draw a stick figure, but studying art is a love that I always go back too. Can’t wait to see more :D
Thank you so much, Lina, about six more are planned. : )
Absolutely magnificent work! I would choose to live with any one of them and wish I had the funds to give you to continue to amaze, delight and inspire all who have the eyes to recognize the brilliant work you have brought to fruition in our time! Rock on brother!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🥰🌺
What a great compliment from such a great artist as yourself, Martine. Honored, thank you!
